Materials
Materials shape everything we create.
At MOKU, each material is selected for its character, its origin, and the way it evolves over time. From solid woods to natural fibers and mineral elements, every choice reflects a balance between durability, texture, and presence.
We work with materials that are alive, that respond to light, develop a patina, and gain depth through use.
Nothing is chosen for short-term perfection.
Each piece is designed to reveal the essence of its material, allowing it to age, adapt, and become part of the space it inhabits.
Understanding Natural Materials
Wood, rattan, leather, linen, stone, and other organic materials are living materials that continue to respond to their environment long after production.
Changes in temperature, humidity, sunlight exposure, and everyday use may cause materials to expand, contract, soften, develop a patina, or show subtle changes in appearance over time.
These changes are natural characteristics of the material and should not be considered defects.
WHY THESE MATERIALS
We do not choose materials for their uniformity. We choose them for their character, their weight, their smell, their origin. Each one has been selected because it belongs here, in this climate, in this craft tradition, in this approach to making things that last. With proper care, your Mōku pieces will age beautifully and remain part of your home for years to come.
NO TWO ALIKE
Natural materials do not repeat themselves. A knot in the grain, a shift in tone, a surface that caught more light during drying. These are not flaws to be corrected. They are the proof that something real was made by real hands. No two pieces are exactly alike, and we believe these differences are what make each item special. We preserve them intentionally.

Sungkai
A light-toned hardwood native to Southeast Asia, sungkai is prized for its even grain and natural resilience. It takes finish well, holds its form over time, and brings a calm, architectural quality to furniture.

Iron wood
One of the hardest woods in the archipelago, iron wood earns its name. Its tight grain and deep, almost black tones give it a sculptural weight, a material that asks to be used, not just admired.

Teak
Teak is valued for its strength, durability, and rich natural grain. Resistant to humidity and time, it develops a deep patina, bringing warmth and character to every piece.

Mango
Mango wood offers a lighter, more expressive grain with subtle variations in tone. Ranging from warm honey hues to deeper browns. Its organic texture brings a soft, natural feel, perfect for creating balanced and welcoming interiors.

Lychee
Lychee wood is known for its dense structure and unique surface variations. Its refined texture and natural irregularities give each piece a distinctive, sculptural presence.

Suar
Suar is a bold and expressive wood, recognized for its dramatic grain patterns and tonal contrasts. Each piece is unique, carrying strong visual depth and a sense of raw authenticity.

Mindi
Mindi wood is appreciated for its smooth texture and balanced tone. Lighter in appearance, it brings a sense of calm and subtle elegance to contemporary spaces.

Travertine
Travertine is a natural stone defined by its mineral texture and soft, earthy tones. Each surface is unique, bringing depth, weight, and timeless elegance to a space.

Terrazzo
A surface built from fragments, stone, marble, glass, bound together and polished into something cohesive. Terrazzo holds history in its composition, and brings a quiet complexity to floors and surfaces.

Marble
Cool to the touch, warm to the eye. Each slab of marble is unrepeatable, its veining shaped by geological time rather than human intention. We use it sparingly, where presence matters.

Lava stone
Formed from volcanic eruption, lava stone carries the geological memory of Bali beneath its surface. Dense, dark, and deeply textured, it grounds a space with a presence that is both raw and refined.

Ceramic
Shaped by hand and fired at high temperatures, our ceramics carry the marks of their making. Each piece holds slight variations in tone and surface, a quiet reminder that no two objects emerge from the kiln alike.

Onyx
Translucent and luminous, onyx is a stone that reveals itself only in light. Its banded patterns shift from amber to honey to cream, making it less a material than a surface to be read.

Resin
Used as a binder and a finish, resin allows us to capture the natural world, inclusions of stone, wood, or pigment, within a translucent surface. Each piece becomes a cross-section of material and intention.

Steel
Steel introduces contrast and structure. Clean, precise, and durable, it balances the warmth of natural materials while adding a modern, architectural edge.

Banana leaf
Harvested and dried, banana leaf brings an unexpected softness to woven forms. Its natural fibres catch light differently across the day, adding warmth and an organic rhythm to any surface.

Rattan
Rattan is a flexible natural fiber, handwoven to create light yet durable forms. Its texture brings rhythm and softness, adding a tactile dimension to any space.

Seagrass
Woven seaweed offers a unique organic texture with subtle tonal variations. Lightweight and naturally expressive, it adds depth and a handcrafted feel to each design.

Linnen
Linen ages the way good things do, softening with each wash, relaxing into the body, becoming more itself over time. We value it for its honesty: no synthetic finish, no forced uniformity.

Cotton
Cotton provides softness and comfort through its natural fibers. Breathable and versatile, it enhances the sensory experience while maintaining a clean, understated aesthetic.
